Newsdesk, April 2, 2023: Expressing reservations about the process of disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as an MP, Nazira Block Congress Committee (NBCC) has alleged that BJP’s central leaders are maliciously trying to keep the Congress leader away from parliamentary democracy in view of the 2024 general elections.
Addressing a press conference organised by NBCC at Nazira-based Rajiv Bhawan on Saturday, APCC member Abdur Rahman said that Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified from the Lok Sabha for “only a verbal criminal offence” whereas BJP leaders have committed bigger crimes.
“The BJP is scared of Rahul Gandhi’s growing popularity following his Bharat Jodo Yatra. Gandhi has been raising his voice for the people and against the murder of democratic values in the country. That is why the BJP has resorted to a malicious and undemocratic campaign against Gandhi in view of the 2024 elections. The BJP is also misusing constitutional institutions,” Rahman said.
He also alleged that Gandhi has been targeted because he asked questions in Parliament on investment of Rs 20,000 crore in Adani shell firms, investment of poor people’s money deposited in LIC and SBI in Adani group and the purported relationship between the businessman and the Prime Minister.
“The Congress always respects the law and the judiciary, but we have reservations about the way Gandhi was disqualified as an MP within such a short period of his conviction,” Rahman said.
A court in Gujarat’s Surat had recently sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail in a 2019 criminal defamation case.
NBCC president Sovaram Gogoi, Nazira Block Mahila Congress president Tulumoni Konwar, Nazira Rural Block Congress Committee general secretary Apurba Baruah and other Congress workers were present at the press meet.
