People of of Nazira organised a protest rally and Dharna against Nazira Municipalty

News Desk, 10 October,2023 : Nazira Nagorik Somittee  called for a protest on October 9 with banners and posters in the streets. The citizens of Nazira have regretted that the Nazira Municipality has done a serious injustice to the citizens by imposing  high level  tax  without any survey on the financial level of the citizens. The Nagorik Somittee already  submitted three memorandum to the Civic authority on March 10, May 2 and May 23 this year  to take a positive  decision on the raising tax issue and appealed to solve it  through dialogue considering the capacity of the citizens . The citizens were burdened with an unprecedented increase in taxes when the municipality initially imposed an increase of 7.5 per cent on the “annual rental value” and recently insisted on a 5 per cent increase in the rates, but the citizens’ committee has insisted on imposing a relaxed tax. After the demonstration Nagarik Somittee submitted a memorandum   to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate  for urgent consideration. Nazira Block Congress, CPI, Aam Aadmi Party, Assam Jatiya Parishad, Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad, Bir Lachit Sena, Scheduled Castes Youth Chhatra Parishad, Nazira businessmen and various local leaders were also participated tn the protest rally and dharna programme.CPI leader Kanak Gogoi  said that the country’s economy is deteriorating and all citizens expressed their support for a dynamic tax system. However, not all citizens of the society have huge incomes from business or other sectors. The youth leader asked why the Nazira municipality has tolerated the 5 per cent tax increase which many other town committees and municipalities in the state have not done.  Nagorik Somittee urged for the tax increase to be proportional to the ability of the citizens and the services provided by the municipalities.
